School Operational Services (Level 5) – Grounds / Maintenance Assistant


• Performing general laboring tasks, such as moving furniture and equipment, assisting trades personnel with manual duties
• Performing general maintenance tasks such as painting, hanging pictures, repairing doors, furniture, windows, general repairs etc.
• Performing general gardening tasks such as planting and trimming of trees, including preparing grounds and undertaking planting sowing, planting and the watering of plants, gardens, trees, lawns and displays, removing cuttings, raking leaves
• Performing horticultural duties in areas such as sports playing fields, garden maintenance and foliage control
• Performing outdoor maintenance such as cleaning/emptying litter bins, cleaning gutters/drains/culverts and a range of industrial cleaning tasks
• Perform exterior building maintenance
• Performing routine maintenance of turf, synthetic, artificial and other play surfaces and equipment
• Taking general care of school vehicles
• Maintain a clean and safe workspace, and abide by workplace health and safety policies and procedures; and
• All duties outlined in the daily weekly routine (DWR) attached to this job description and
• Any other tasks as directed


An employee at this level may require routine supervision and general directions. An employee may apply self-direction of knowledge and have substantial depth and expertise in some areas. The employee will also have a strong understanding and application of conditions of employment, the school, the school’s policies and procedures in relation to the work environment and the employees with whom the employee will be working. An employee at this level would typically have completed one of the following relevant qualifications:

• Undergraduate Degree such as; horticulture, plant science, engineering or similar
• Advanced Diploma,
• Diploma
• Certificate IV or
• Post-trade Certificate and extensive work experience (2 or more years)

• Blue Card (Working with children)
• First Aid Certificate (preferred but not essential)
• Drivers Licence
• Vaccination Certificate for Covid-19


• Able and willing to listen and understand verbal and written instructions
• Ability to work within a team and autonomously once given instructions
• Organised and able to meet deadlines
• Flexible and able to reprioritize daily tasks to accommodate emergent requests


• Completes tasks on time
• Deals with and builds professional working relationships with clients, suppliers and other
employees at all times
